Tell me what you want, (what you really, really want) to do
When you want to put a detailed image on your pottery, one technique you can try is to use a silk screen.
I wanna put a bird on it!
Follow the steps below
Choose an image from the collection of silk screens available
Next, choose the color in which you would like your outline to appear on your finished piece
Find a Pottery Spottery employee to help you add thickening agent to your color and provide you with ‘frog tape’
Use ‘frog tape’ to tape down the silk screen in the position where you would like the image to appear
Mix the thickening agent and the paint until you get a toothpaste consistency.
Smush the paint with your finger into the areas of the silk screen where it is transparent.
Wait until the paint has lost its sheen (approx. 5 mins)
Carefully remove the tape and silk screen
Rinse the silk screen with lukewarm water and lay it flat to dry
Follow the steps below
When you want to personalize your pottery with words, the best tool to use is a detail tip
Go to the drawer with the ‘write me’ tile on the front and take out a detail tip screw top
Select the bottle of the color you wish to use
Replace the top with the detail tip
Use a pencil to draft your writing directly on the pottery piece (Pencil markings will be burned off in the kiln)
Use the detail tip to cover the pencil marks you have drawn
One coat is all you will need!
I wanna put words on it!
I wanna trace an existing image
When you want to put a detailed image on your pottery, a technique you can use is carbon tracing paper.
Follow the steps below
Choose a pattern or existing picture you would like to transfer to your pottery from one of our design books or request a print out of an image you find online
Visit the creation station and find the drawer with carbon copy paper
Tape the carbon paper with the red side towards your pottery in the location where you want your image
Tape the pattern or picture over the carbon paper with design side facing you.
Use a pen or pencil to trace the desired image, make sure to apply some pressure so that the pigment transfers to the pottery surface
Once you have completely traced the image, remove both layers of paper
Follow the steps below
When you want to create a striped pattern or divide sections of colors you can use painters tape
Visit the creation station and find the drawer marked shapes and lines
For stripes borders select the width tape you wish to use - For shapes, find the sponge that matches the shape you would like to repeat
